What is the Preparation Process for Concrete Overlays?
When getting ready to install concrete overlays in Surrey, proper preparation is perhaps the most important step. Following the preparation process helps to make sure the job is done correctly, and will last for years to come. Poor preparation often results in failure of the concrete overlay. So what are the basic steps of the preparation process?
First, the existing concrete must be completely cleaned. This includes removing any existing coatings such as paint or sealers. The presence of dirt or oil would reduce how well the overlay will bond with the concrete, so it is essential that the concrete is completely free of any contaminants.
Next, any of the existing concrete that is damaged on the surface must be removed. This includes concrete that is scaling, spalling or showing signs of delamination. The existing concrete surface must be completely solid.
After damaged concrete is removed, now is the time that any cracks must be filled. Usually cracks wider than about half a millimeter will need a special epoxy used to repair them. This must be done so that the crack does not grow and travel to the surface through the new overlay.
The final step in the preparation process is to make the surface of the concrete rough. This is done to increase the surface area of the concrete, giving the overlay more area to bond with. This step can often be combined with the removal of any surface damage, as a grinder or shotblaster will remove damaged concrete as it roughs up the surface.
This is the general process that your concrete contractors in Surrey will follow to prepare for a concrete overlay. For more information, contact Pacific Rock & Concrete Design.
